Someone had to come up with it.
At one point, I was thinking it would be nice if a crowdsourcing website would allow users to post data science problems, and ask data hobbyists to come up with answers and solutions. Just like what Netflix did with their Netflix Prize Contest, but on a larger scale.
Well, Kaggle is that kind of place. Competitions are created by individuals or corporations, and data scientists basically compete for the best solution. Details on the different contests, evaluation schemes, data samples are available for each contest. Prizes are also disclosed, although not all of them involve cash prizes.
I like their motto:
We’re making data science a sport.
